First night in our new home

Last night Jason and I went out and spent the first night in our new place. The movers have not been there, there was no bed, just a rug and some bedding to sleep on, but the commute has been seeming to grow longer each day so we decided that we would just stay at the new place. We made a grocery store run so that there would be some food in the house. We did not buy anything for dinner or breakfast, it was more a comfort thing. There should be food in the kitchen because kitchens should have food.

We walked to an Indian restaurant down the street named Diva. We had a drink at the bar while waiting for our table and smelled the buttery smell of the basmati rice and all of the other wonderful smells of Indian food. When we looked into the glass-walled kitchen we were happy to see them putting skewers into what must have been a tandori oven. People not wanting to wait for tables were popping into the restaurant picking up bags of take out food. Soon we realized that we would be one of those people one night.

There was dal makhani (Jason's black dal with lots of heavy cream) on the menu, but we opted for other things. The tables were emptying as we were getting our meals and thought we had arrived at the end of the rush. When I looked at my watch and realized it was nearly 10:00 PM, it seemed logical that there were a few empty tables.

We stumbled out of the restuarant, bellies full of lamb curry and navratan korma, for a walk around the neighborhood in the unseasonably warm weather (over 50 degrees at 11:00 PM). The rain that they had been threatening had not arrived. We were not the only people who decided that it was a nice night for a walk. We wandered up a street away from Davis Square (the center of our neighborhood) and soon figured out that it was the road to Tufts University. Students have not gotten any smarter or less conspicuous since I have been one.

We headed back to the square and past JP Licks, one of the local ice cream places, to see people sitting comfortably at the tables outside-- a rare (first?) sighting in January in Somerville. Back at the house, Jason tried out the new jacuzzi tub and declared it satisfactory, despite the fact that he had to use it in the dark. The master bath has a full size window that faces the street, and we have yet to hang any sort of window covering. The lack of window coverings were also notable in the morning. The window in the bedroom faces south east. First thing in the morning the sun came through the window. In the winter, it is not that early, but in the summer, it will be a problem.

The morning found us walking down to Davis Square again to run errands and, of course, get something to eat. I picked up some bread at one of the local Italian grocery stores. There was a cooler with cured meats and cheeses hanging as well as a cooler with all kinds of salamis, hams, cheeses, etc for slicing, and fresh sausages that I am sure were made there. There were vats of olives and cases with large dried fish. The atmosphere was completed by the owner, the person who was working there, and a few of the long time customers who were there. The store will serve as an excellent complement to Dave's Pasta, a wonderful more prepared food place that is closer to our house. I had the best mushroom soup ever there, and the sandwiches on their homemade bread were also quite yummy.

Jason and I are more than looking forward to our move on Friday. If any of you are going to be around, we will be having people over that night any time after 6:30. Just call for directions. You may be asked to help figure out where we are going to put art, but all of the boxes should be in by then.
